Manchester

Another death-defying dawn voyage with a criminal 3 hour layover in London, surfing on sofas – our regular tonic for us during this murderous month. The place was an impressive concert hall which would surely be wonderful for classical music, but for others—even with mostly acoustic instruments—it’s almost impossible to play, due to the super-long natural reverberation, and I’m telling you, it was a terrible feeling, I kept getting sound bounced back to me from the balconies rising up the cajón, like an invisible little dwarf was banging a hammer during the performance without rhyme or reason, just to screw with us.

Beyond that, the sound equipment was almost insufficient, as we usually find in places meant for classical music… and yet still, just like almost always, we got everyone up on their feet. In the beginning it was very formal, very controlled, but you know, even though the beginning was rough (and the songs that we start with, Respira and Color, are also not exactly easy), by the end everyone was standing and bringing this impressive auditorium to life.

In Bailaores, we were really flipping out over the people on stage because there were a few “bailaores” dancing with the same choreography and a fantastic swing, like an African tribe had materialized out of nowhere, and as it turns out, they were about a dozen dancers from Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, tremendous, what characters, they left us just slack-jawed!

Even though the place wasn’t totally full, it was around 80% and the people really gave it up and energized us. Muchas gracias, Manchcester!

I think, from my attempt at translating this diary report, ODB were unhappy with the sound in the Bridgewater Hall. We last saw the band in Molina de segura last september and the PA then was much better particularly the guitars of Paco and Ramon were less muffled by the acoustics.

No matter, it was brilliant to see ODB in the north of england, the music just gets better and better, we hope very much to see you again soon

Thanks for coming to Manchester and despite the acoustics it was a great show and the bands enthusiasm as always shines through.

Hope to see you again soon.
